50th English Meeting / One-Year Anniversary
We kicked off as a small group of three on Wednesday. February 8th 2012 As a home base for our meetings we chose the stylish Original Irish Pub Lucky's in Třebič's Jewish Quarter. We went there regularly until the 22nd Meeting, since then we have started to change places. After third meeting we agreed on changing the day for Thursday. We have kept this day ever since. As of this time, the supporting website, you are reading now, has been run. Recently, however, the website hasn't been very well maintained because we focus more on Facebook. At the fourth meeting the Group doubled in numbers. An American teacher permanently settled in Třebíč - and at the same time a big supporter of such an event - brought along two other guys. A week later he created a Facebook Group and since that time we have been using it as a main means of communication within the group. The Group started to expand gradually and in a year of existence it has reached 100 members. Truth be told, just around a half of them has ever attended at least one of the Meetings. On average, between 10 and 15 people come for every single get-together. The record, with about 25 attendees, was set at the 32nd Meeting, when a few American soldiers joined in. At the meetings there is a opportunity to speak English not only with Czech fellows or an American teacher - we were also happy to meet people of different nationalities, from the countres such as China, Surinam, Holland, Spain, San Marino, Russia, Romania, Germany, Nigeria as well as above mentioned group of American pilots. Apart from weekly Meetings, which we consider standard ones (nothing special happens there), sometimes Thursday hits a special occasion. Let me name a few of them: St. Patrik's Day (we drank green beer in Lucky's), Sir Arthur's Day (a celebration of Guiness beer), Thanksgiving day (well, we didn't eat a turkey). We also watched a couple of sporting events together such as quaterfinal of European Soccer Championship (The Czech Republic vs. Portugal), quaterfinal and semifinal of World Ice Hockey Championship - against Sweden and Slovakia. Once we organised a Karaoke party, where we tried to enjoy ourselves while singing. Wow, that was something. Except for all these Thursday Meetings we occasionaly arrange Extra Special Meetings, either during the week or during the weekend. Here are some that have already happened: Luxusní weekend II in Litohošť, Powerful weekend in a cabin in Ptáčovský žleb, Petanque Tournament, Cotage weekend in Klatovec, Special Christmas Party, Bowling Night, Let's go to the cinema and some others. What places do we usually go to? Our favorite pubs are: Lucky's, Infinity and Holiday but we also tried some others such as Phiasco, U Jelínků, Grand Hotel and Lihovar. These are just basic statistics. Following you'll find a few photos and then a more personal view of one of the most faithful members of our Group - Radka. Radka, thanks for that. I appreciate it. |

And now how Radka sees it: English meetings - I like them! I like them a lot! It is always fun there and it is really good to meet friends there each Thursday in various pubs in Třebíč. The organizer is a very nice young man, Honza Šindelář. He is ever willing to give us advice about English, his grammar is simply perfect! Usually between 8 - 20 people are coming in the pub. But when we started a year ago, we were only a little group of 3 people - me, Honza and Hanka (very handy hair stylist - she is always smiley and she cuts our hair :-)). One of the members is Glenn - the American Třebíčák. He is very open, friendly, and handsome English teacher and we are always glad to see him here. The other regular visitors are Petr and Štěpán - really nice IT boys, which always come in a good mood. Also Jirka with his broad vocabulary and experience from Holland and Ireland. And Jirka's pretty daughter Marsi (a student of the university in Brno). The regular visitor is also Hannah from Germany. She works in a German company here and her English is really good. It is always very nice to find something new about foreign countries and about their life there. Some friends have experience from other countries and it is great to listen to them. One of them is Tomáš, the taekwondo teacher and his girlfriend Iva. And also a busy guy Lukáš, who has a nice American accent. All of us came in the English group to improve our English. It is a great opportunity to practice our English and meet with new friends on the way. We organized some other activities, such as bowling, English weekends, karaoke, Christmas party, etc and the best thing, to happen, is that we are not only a group of English speaking people, we started to be friends. No one of us is perfect in English. We were all beginners and no one of us will ever speak like a native speaker. But we all want to speak English and we are glad to meet new friends. The facebook group is big. Some people come regularly, some appeared only few times in the pub, some of them only write posts, because are too far abroad and some are maybe shy to come to us. Don't be shy. We are waiting you and we are looking forward to meet with you and talk to you. We don't expect, that your English will be great, we will be happy to meet you as a friend. |
