An English dictionary is a wonderful thing but it's still not almighty. All of the renowned publishers (Oxford, Cambridge, Longman, Macmillan, Merriam-Webster's) offer apart from their printed versions also Internet online versions of their products.
But sometimes it's difficult to figure out, according to the explanation, what the particular word looks like.
Images Google can help you. This tool works best if you are looking for nouns. Let's say that somewhere in the text you notice a word SHAMROCK. You can start a dictionary (e.g. Macmillan) a see what it says (SHAMROCK - a small plant with three round green leaves on each stem. The shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland). No picture to give you the idea what SHAMROCK really looks like.
In this case I recommend going to http://images.google.com and in the search box enter the desired word and press Search or Hledej (magnifying glass).
